People often ask, rightfully so, what have you done to prove you have the ability. Assuming my resume and letters of recommendations will suffice, there are a few odd ducks who want to see what you've done.
Several years ago, in a move from California back to the southeast, I had a box lost which was sent via Federal Express. Unfortunately, it had all of my work product originals of brochures I had done, writings for publications that no longer exist, and a history of my business in pictures, work product, and letters of recommendations. Luckily, I still have copies of those things but it was still a blow to my ego and my identity. Like many men, I identify myself primarily with what I do for a living.

First, I began working in 1972! I have done many things of the past 40 years! I've been a CLOWN! Yes, I owned the second balloon and gift delivery service in San Francisco. We also operated this business in San Diego. I've leased complete floors in office buildings, designed the spaces out and opened The Small Business Center. We had 4 total before going into public relations. I am a public speaker, a business consultant, writer, and author. So,... when asked the above question,
My answer is this: WORKING and taking care of my elderly family (the reason I moved from California), and then I reduced my paying business to write. I also have been blessed with 2, and now a 3rd, grandchildren. So, selfishly I have been enjoying working, writing and playing with my kids!
The important thing to know is that I have kept up my craft; I've kept up with technowlogy, and I working more and more now that the boys are in school. Recently, I have joined with a publisher in San Diego so that we can now offer our clients a way to be a published (but not self-published) author, and provide them with the appropriate promotional activities. So, there you have it!
I do love my work, but thankfully I have other skills and while I have had slow spells I've worked in a completely different profession, which involves communications, detail, and the ability to manage large projects.
